| |
| |
| |
| 3,000 million pesetas of investment and more
than three years’ work |
| |
| The utmost in safety and comfort. |
| |
IRIZAR has always been
firmly committed to rigor and a job well done. So today we can
say that the IRIZAR spirit has, once again, borne fruit. We are
proud to present the new IRIZAR PB model coach.
More than 3 years of exhaustive research work with organisations,
suppliers and customers all over the world, as well as with all
the people at IRIZAR, with the sole aim of offering the market
the best product and service, has resulted in a new generation
coach.
|
| |
Created and designed on
the basis of priority objectives, which came out of the study done
and which were met to perfection. Greater SAFETY, greater COMFORT,
greater RELIABILITY and greater PROFITABILITY.
On 27 August 1997 the initial ideas establishing the bases of
the project for the creation of a new coach saw the light:
|
| |
 |
Innovative |
| |
|
 |
Capable of satisfying
the needs for the next decade. |
| |
|
 |
Competitive. |
| |
|
 |
Initial launch in
2001. |
|
| |
| These demanding bases led
to the decision to establish four basic pillars to the development
work carried out over these three long years: |
| |
 |
Marketing: To analyse the future
requirements of a global market. |
| |
|
 |
Design:
To exploit the style and design inherent to the automotive
industry.
|
| |
|
 |
Technology:
Application in our sector of knowledge about more advanced
technologies from the aviation and automotive sectors. |
| |
|
 |
Experience:
The knowledge and enthusiasm of a team of people with more
than one hundred years behind it, which led the project |
|
| |
| The project was initiated
after an exhaustive search for collaborators who could meet these
requirements and understood the bases of the project, with the
following collaborators: |
| |
 |
 |
LKS |
|
A company expert
in market-product analysis that focused its work in
2 directions:
1. To analyse and get a feeling for customers’ requirements
over the next decade, getting the opinion of owners,
technicians, drivers and end-users. This study was
carried out in 6 European countries (Spain, France,
U.K., Italy, Germany, and Scandinavia).
2. Universities, Institutions and well-informed
people, in general, were also consulted about possible
developments
in technology and legislation.
The study showed us that the main concerns were
centred on improving the following attributes, both
qualitatively and quantitatively, in this order:
SAFETY, COMFORT, RELIABILITY,
PROFITABILITY.

ARUP DESIGN RESEARCH (A.D.R) |
|
An Engineering and Design english company known for
Engineering Work like the Sydney Opera House, Hong
Kong Airport and the Barcelona Tower, as well as
design and industrialisation work in the automotive
sector, in the luxury range, for companies like
Bentley, Rolls-Royce,... and for luxury jet aircraft.
Having analysed IRIZAR’s competition in
Europe and after rigorous analysis work, it was
concluded that the challenge was to beat IRIZAR’s
current Century model, which would be the reference
point for measuring the objectives reached.
Faced with the high amount of investment involved,
IRIZAR has been a very demanding client in terms
of how the attributes required by the market
were to be met.
For A.D.R. the personality of the new coach
lies in the following aspects:
- Exterior: A style with a character of its own,
dynamic, robust and safe.
- Interior: A sense of theatre, with elegant forms,
airiness and transmitting safety.

SENER |
|
An international engineering company with a great deal
of experience in the aerospace, automotive, communications
and energy sectors, with its own philosophy based
on the following slogans: Innovation and a commitment
to quality.
More than 30 years of experience, with the following
standing out: Landing gear for the X-38/CRV,
return, rescue vehicle for the International
Space Station, as well as developments for the
following automotive companies: SEAT, VW, NISSAN
and ALSTOM for railway equipment.
SENER’s contribution has mainly had an
effect on the safety and comfort of the new coach.
The increase in safety lies in a structure designed
to ensure the coach is more stable and safe to
drive, and provide greater integrity in the case
of accidents. It is more stable to drive, as
confirmed by the test drivers, thanks to the
high torsional stiffness and bending stiffness
values of the new structure. Greater strength
in cases of overturning, 30% stronger than the
structure of the Century, has been achieved thanks
to the new design of the structure’s anti-overturning
rings and efficient advantage taken of the side
structure.
Comfort has been increase in three different
areas: environmental comfort, thanks to the new
climate control system; acoustic comfort, thanks
to the new concept of acoustic insulation; and
comfort in terms f vibrations, thanks to the
reduction in vibrations achieved by the structure.
SENER’s contribution to the quality and
profitability of the new coach was also important:
Quality was improved thanks to a structure with
greater dimensional precision, which enables
precise adaptation of finishes and better adjustment
of elements (doors)..
Profitability has been improved thanks to an
aerodynamic design that reduces resistance and
the amount of dirt deposited, and thanks to a
more rigid structure and greater dimensional
precision, which reduces maladjustment problems
and facilitates the interchangeability of spare
parts.

IRIZAR |
|
IRIZAR established the objectives, led the project,
worked together with suppliers and chassis manufacturers
and co-ordinated everybody’s involvement,
directing all this knowledge and ability towards
the achievement of the objectives and attributes
required of the new coach.
More than 1,000 people have been involved in this
three and a half year process, more than 3,000 Million
pesetas have been invested (€18 M) and more
than 80 innovations have been applied.
In terms of the attributes indicated by the market
analysis, some examples of the value added are:
|
|
|
| |
| |
| SAFETY |
| |
 |
Lower centre of gravity. |
| |
|
 |
Balanced axle load distribution. |
| |
|
 |
More than 30% increase in the overturning rigidity
of the structure, front impact rigidity and torsional
stiffness, as well as 80% in bending stiffness. |
| |
|
 |
100% increase in light intensity (at 50 m.). |
|
|
| |
| |
| COMFORT |
| |
 |
Ample access and interior space. |
| |
|
 |
Ergonomic and functional design of seats. |
| |
|
 |
More spacious and ergonomic driver area. |
| |
|
 |
Automatic climate control system with 30% more features. |
| |
|
 |
Reduction in noise (66 dba) and vibrations. |
| |
|
 |
Relaxed environment in terms of forms and colours. |
|
|
| |
| |
| RELIABILITY |
| |
 |
Repetitiveness based on modularity and assembly tools. |
| |
|
 |
2mm assembly tolerance. |
| |
|
 |
Manufacture of parts in machined steel moulds. |
| |
|
 |
Use of materials and components with the latest technology. |
| |
- Headlights (based on automotive sector)
- Profiled aluminium
- Telene,rim, smc ...
|
| |
|
 |
Stronger windscreen. |
|
|
| |
| |
| PROFITABILITY |
| |
 |
Better aerodynamics, less weight: lower consumption. |
| |
|
 |
Less time spent on repairs. |
| |
|
 |
Less stoppages. |
| |
|
 |
Greater interchangeability. |
| |
|
 |
Competitive price. |
|
|
| |
| This leads us to the following reflection that
we have made our own at IRIZAR: |
| |
 |
| |
All this convinces us that
we are providing what is required and we are therefore convinced
that we shall be able to share the future with our customers and
suppliers, which will enable IRIZAR to continue growing and creating
employment and wealth. |
